Los Alamitos sits four minutes east of our Katella shop, which matters at two in the morning when a limb comes off one of the parkway trees and lands across a roof. Those trees are the best thing about the older streets and the reason we do as much emergency tarping here as we do. Homes built between 1950 and 1965 have shallow-pitch roofs, modest overhangs and sheathing that was never asked to take a direct hit. A limb strike opens the deck rather than just stripping shingles off it.
The other half of our board-up work here runs along Katella itself. Los Alamitos Medical Center and the medical offices around it can't simply close because a storefront window failed or wind pulled a length of parapet flashing loose. Those jobs get built around the door: panels sized so entrances still swing, nothing crossing a wheelchair path, and the work staged after hours when the schedule allows. Same for the older commercial buildings near the race course. We photograph and itemize everything, and we bill your carrier directly.
What Los Alamitos Changes About Board-Up & Tarping
1What the parkway trees actually do
A limb strike is not a shingle problem. It punctures the deck, splits rafters and leaves an opening that keeps growing while the branch sits in it. We take what's on the roof off first, check whether the framing under the tarp will hold a fastener, then carry the tarp over the ridge instead of stopping short of it. Stopping short of the ridge is why most tarps around here fail.
2Board-ups that keep a clinic open
Medical offices along Katella carry obligations a house doesn't. Doors have to keep working, exit paths have to stay clear, and patients arrive whether or not the front glass is intact. We frame those board-ups so the opening still functions, use panels that come off in minutes when the glazier arrives, and keep glass and debris out of the path of travel rather than swept into a pile by the entry.
3Sixty-year-old sheathing decides the fasteners
Roof decks from this era are often thin boards rather than the plywood a screw gun expects, and six decades of re-roofing has left them with more old holes than sound wood. So we probe before we fasten. Where the deck is soft we carry the tarp past it to solid framing and batten there instead. It is slower on the night, and it is why the cover is still up three weeks later.
How the Work Runs
The method is the same one we use on every board-up & tarping job, documented to the IICRC S500:2025 standard. Here it is in short — the full emergency board-up & roof tarping process explains each stage in detail.
- Safety and structure first
- Photograph the opening before we cover it
- Dry-in the roof opening
- Board and brace the openings
- Shore what is carrying load
- Handle the water already inside
The Los Alamitos Background Worth Knowing
When a home has been standing since 1958, the plumbing question is not whether something will fail but which thing already has. We routinely find three generations of repair inside a single Los Alamitos wall: original galvanized, a copper section from a 1980s repair, and a PEX patch from last decade, all joined with whatever transition fitting was on the truck that day.
There is more on the housing stock, drainage and plumbing history of this city on our water damage restoration in Los Alamitos page.

What It Costs in Los Alamitos
We do not quote a number over the phone before seeing the property — anyone who does is guessing. The variables that actually move the price on a board-up & tarping job are area covered and roof pitch, number and size of openings, conditions at the time of the call, and they are broken down in full on the emergency board-up & roof tarping page. The assessment and the written estimate are free anywhere in Los Alamitos, day or night, with no obligation.
Board-Up & Tarping Questions from Los Alamitos Homeowners
It will if it's fastened to something solid. In Los Alamitos the limb usually breaks the deck, so a tarp stapled to damaged sheathing tears loose in the next wind and you're worse off than before. We clear the limb, find sound framing, screw battens through the tarp into that framing and wrap the top edge over the ridge. Built that way it holds for weeks, which is normally longer than the adjuster takes.
A properly fastened tarp on a sound deck holds for weeks and gets you through the rest of a wet season. We have had covers stay tight for a couple of months while claims and permits worked out. That said, it is temporary by design — the material degrades in UV, and every storm works on the edges. If yours is going to be up longer than a few weeks, we come back and check it rather than assuming.
Usually not. Most policies require you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage and allow emergency mitigation without waiting for an adjuster — waiting is often the thing that creates a coverage argument. Call your carrier and open the claim, then let us secure the building. We photograph everything before and after and give you an itemized invoice, which is what the adjuster needs to approve the emergency line separately from the repair scope.
Usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes — Los Alamitos is our closest neighbor, straight east on Katella from where our trucks stage. The 60-minute response commitment applies here the same as in Cypress.
